Weston Avenue Allotments

Soil
The soil at Weston Avenue was brought there in 1973 from the Swing Swang site on Mead Way at the insistence of the Ministry of Agriculture due to the state of the original soil. A question was even asked in the House of Commons on the subject

The soil is dominated by clay and you may have noticed that there are lots of bits of clay pipe in it. The soil came from an area about 200 metres NW of the Clay Pipe pub. Generally the soil tends to be alkaline. Guidance on testing the soil is here.

Security
The security of the site is very important. Please ensure that you always close the entry gate securely and that you do not allow unknown visitors onto the site.

Southern boundary
The southern boundary of the allotments and Pages Field is formed by a hedge which follows the line of the pre-conquest trackway called Theedway. The hedge is protected by a Tree Preservation Order over most of its length except for the bit parallel to Garland Way i.e. all of the bit adjacent to the Sandhills estate.

It is an offence to “cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy or cause or permit the cutting down, topping, lopping, uprooting or wilfull destruction of any tree” mentioned in the TPO. The hedge consists of a woodland tree belt containing Norway Maple, Alder, Scots Pine, Field Maple, Willow, Oak, Ash and Hawthorn.
